My Brothers All,
It has come to my attention that some, within the Knights of Columbus and
outside of the Order, favor dropping the term "Intellectual" from our mission,
and any reference to any specific condition and just say "HELPING PEOPLE
WITH DISABILITIES".
The Lamb program began as a State Knights of Columbus project in1969 for one
purpose only - “To raise funds and distribute them to accredited organizations
and institutions throughout North Carolina which assist people who because
of Mental or Intellectual Impairment, were unable to perform up to their chronological
age”. Over the years, this has changed several times, including using the terms
Mentally Retarded and Mentally Handicapped, but no term has or will change
our mission.
In 1999, the North Carolina State Council saw a need to become a public non-profit
corporation, also known as an IRS 501(c)3 corporation. This was done for many
reasons. One of which was to increase our donations, especially “Corporate
donations”, by allowing those making a donation to add this to their list of
charitable contributions on their annual tax submission to the IRS. However,
the mission remains the same and those we assist have not changed, just the
terminology, which now is Intellectually Disabled.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Lamb Foundation of NC, Inc., let
me state clearly that our purpose and mission, as defined over 40 years ago,
has not and will not change. There is an ever growing need for us to stay focused
on supporting the organizations and institutions that share our mission.
Sincerely,
Dave Onofrio

Operation LAMB
Since its inception in 1974, the LAMB Foundation
of North Carolina has raised over $19 million dollars to assist people
with intellectual disabilities.
The LAMB Foundation is a 501(c)3 public charity and an entirely volunteer
organization named from a quotation from Matthew 24:40: ""…whatsoever
you do to the Least Among My Brethren, that you do also to me."
It is also the main charity supported by the Knights of Columbus throughout
the state. Each year the Knights, their families and friends stand long
hours outside shopping centers where they offer free Tootsie Rolls to all
passersby and ask for donations to assist groups that aid those with intellectual
disabilities. Their smiling faces and bright yellow aprons have become
familiar sights throughout this great state.
Another important aspect of the Foundation's fundraising comes from the
generosity of corporate and individual donations.
Thanks to that generosity in 2008 alone, LAMB raised just under one million
dollars.
As an all- volunteer effort, over 92% of the funds raised go directly to program funding. 85% of the total donations is given to local charities and the remaining 15% is distributed by the Foundation to regional entities assisting those with intellectual disabilities.
