Worthy Sir Knights and Brothers,
Please welcome our newest Sir Knights, 68 Brothers, Exemplified on August 26, 2017 in Asheville including Fr. Davis Binoy of St. Matthews Church in Charlotte. The Fourth Degree Team performed an excellent presentation. The Sir Knights of St. Lawrence Assembly 781 and Brothers of St. Eugene Council 1191 did an excellent job in setting up, assisted with the equipment and served a great lunch. The ladies enjoyed a program hosted by Paula Kotz and Marion Hamel and thank you ladies very much. Many kudos to Great Smoky Mountain Assembly No, 3001 of Maggie Valley, registered 31 candidates for the Exemplification and the Host Assembly 781 – 12 candidates. There was also a “Pass the Helmet” Collection for a special request for the VA Hospital in Asheville with $626.00 in donations received at the luncheon –thank you!
The Vice Supreme Master from Florida SK Robert Anderson attended and was wearing the new 4th Degree Uniform. Naturally he was very popular with all wishing to “see” and get his “view” on the change. He did advise on a few things, which are below, but could not add much more than we already know. There will be a meeting of the DeSoto Province District Masters in 2 weeks and the VSM promised some more guidelines.
As of right now – this is the latest we are aware of: Effective immediately you do not have to wear a tuxedo as a SK, a dark suit is appropriate, not a blazer and mismatched trousers. You CANNOT wear the social baldric with the suit! You may wear the name badge and 4th Degree lapel pin. Effectively, the social baldric is not to be worn, unless you wear the tuxedo. If you choose to purchase the new uniform, you may wear the lapel pin, name badge and mini-jewels of offices held. When serving as an Honor Guard or Color Guard, you will wear the new uniform, service baldric, sword and beret. That is the only time the beret is to be worn. These directions were from the VSM directly. There is a new guideline for the use of the new uniform, equipment, etc. that will be forthcoming from Supreme. Remember, the effective date for the mandatory change over to the new uniform is June 30, 2018. On that date, Regalia as we know it: cape, chapeau and tuxedo will end.
There were a lot of questions asked of the VSM and naturally, he could not answer them all. He could only advise that further information and a guideline would be issued by Supreme. He did remind all that the uniform is available until Sept. 30 at a reduced rate. If interested go online to “Knightsgear”.com to view the purchasing guideline.
I have received many e-mails and letters, stating the displeasure for the new uniform and what the future holds for some SK’s and Assemblies. I am just as in the dark as all of you as to the 5w’s: who, what, where, when and why. The VSM was in the same boat also and all I can ask is that we all be patient and work together until all the information and guidelines are released.
This past month was a busy one for the SK’s of the Raleigh Diocese with the Installation of new Bishop of Raleigh, Very Rev. Luis Zarama. Brother SK’s were tasked with a detail of assisting Clergy in their tent, parking aides and ushers as well as an Honor Guard for both Vespers and the Installation. Our SK’s came through and performed in a very professional manner, receiving many comments from not only the Diocesan Volunteer Committee, but the Priests, Bishops and Deacons that attended. A job well done my Brothers.
The next Fourth Degree Exemplification is scheduled for Saturday November 18, 2017 at Infant of Prague Catholic Church, Jacksonville, NC. All pertinent information will be posted on the State Website shortly. A reminder – the tuxedo is not required for an Exemplification, a dark suit has been approved. This will be spelled out on the Exemplification Dress Code Form.
The Charlotte Diocese “Eucharistic Congress” will be held on Saturday Sept. 9, 2017 at the Charlotte Convention Center. All SK’s are requested to assist as there will be an Honor Guard for the Procession in the morning, Adoration all day and a Mass with an Honor Guard Procession and Eucharistic Honor Guards for the Priests distributing Holy Communion. Your help is needed, please sign up to be a part of this great event for the Charlotte Diocese and in support of Bishop Peter Jugis.
The 2017 -18 Fourth Degree Directory will be mailed to all Faithful Navigators shortly. We will have 100% of all Assemblies listed with their current leadership.
Thank you to all Assemblies as we are once again 100% compliant with Form 186, Report of Officers Chosen for the Year 2017-18. Thank you for your cooperation.
We are looking for help with the Fourth Degree Team in all areas: Exemplars as well as for the Media Team. Please contact me or your FN for further information. We really need some of our younger Brothers to step up and be a part of a great team of Sir Knights.
I would also be remiss if I did not add a plug for new Sir Knights. We are an aging lot, and we are continuously reminded of that every time we look at our membership cards that say “Honorary Life”, etc. Please continue to offer membership to our Brothers – remember all you have to do is ask…….!

Greetings Brother Sir Knights, Worthy Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator,
As we transition from summer to fall, the needs of our Veterans are changing. In my July newsletter, I pointed out the major programs that needs our support. Hopefully, in your budgets, you have made the commitment to support these programs. On behalf of our Veterans, VA Medical Centers and USO-NC, I want to express their appreciation for your support.
Coats for Vets: For the past five years, the Knights of Columbus have provided NEW COATS to needy Veterans. Again, I’m requesting your continuous support of this very important program. Over 2,500 coats have been donated since we began. Purchasing can be accomplished by individuals, Councils, Assemblies or donations by your individual parish. If you would like to make a cash donation is support of the coat program, I will act on your behave to purchase and deliver coats to the VA Medical Center in your area in your name. Credit will be given for your donation. Click here to see the flier.
VAVS Representatives: Welcome, SK Thomas Kotz, FDD, as our new VAVS Deputy Representative to the Asheville VA Medical Center. Also, we need to welcome SK Thomas Mrozek as a Deputy Representative to the Durham VA Medical Center. There still is a need for VAVS Representatives at the Salisbury VA Medical Center. Three deputies are needed. If you might be interested and need more information, contact SK Tom DuPree at firstname.lastname@example.org or 919-302-5550. The responsibilities: *Serve as a liaison between the Knights and the Medical Center *Assist with coordination of the Knights VAVS activities at the Medical Center *Keep the Knights informed regarding VAVS needs, programs, activities or policies.
National Wheel Chair Games: These games were held in Cincinnati, Ohio this year. Teams from the Durham, Salisbury and Fayetteville VA attended. Your contributions to assist these Veterans allowed them to attend. Your funds were used to pay for hotel, transportation and shipment of equipment. 31 Veterans attended this year. Our Veterans want to express their thankfulness to all who supported this very important program. You are helping them see value in their lives NOW. Orlando, Florida will hold the Games in 2018.
Needs: Our Veterans are provided only the basic medical care by the VA Administration. There is a tremendous need by our Veterans for socialization and life-style. Items such as snacks, coffee, water, drinks, entertainment, are not provided and yet offer each Veteran some pleasure. Items such as gift cards to be used to assist the Veterans for special needs, i.e. ice cream, sandwich or last meal. Other items needed to support a Veteran are: tee shirts, socks, underwear, sweat shirts, sweat pants, food for homeless Vets, deodorant, hand soap, women feminine products etc..
A list can be located on each VA Medical Center Home Page. All items must be new and current expiration dates.
